Hampi has long stirred the soul of both the traveller and the historian in me. Its rustic, surreal landscapes and timeworn temples felt like echoes from a place I’d only known in stories. A land steeped in ancient tales, where forgotten empires linger in the poetry of crumbling ruins, and the mighty Vijayanagara Empire still whispers through the wind.

So when the chance finally came to wander its paths and stay at Evolve Back Hampi, it felt less like a trip and more like stepping into the pages of a living chapter of history.

Evolve Back, Hampi is home to a modern-day palace that pays tribute to the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire. A few moments here and you’re instantly transported to the majesty of a bygone era. The Kamalapura Palace draws deep inspiration from the architectural brilliance of the 14th century, with its graceful arches, intricate details, and regal courtyards. This carefully crafted homage to the region’s Indo-Islamic style carries within it the soul of Hampi’s past. The iconic lotus motif, found throughout the ruins, is etched in the interiors as a sacred symbol of purity and awakening.

A Taste Of The Royal Life
The palace houses two main restaurants: Tuluva, a multicuisine restaurant, poised beside the stunning infinity pool, where they’d serve morning meals, and Bahmani, a specialty restaurant for Awadhi and Mughlai cuisine.

Inspired by the regal feasts once served in the courts of the Vijayanagara Empire, we sampled a scrumptious Vijayanagara Thali at Tuluva, which was an immersive culinary journey through the flavours of Karnataka’s royal past. The thali arrives like a visual spectacle, a meticulously curated ensemble of delicacies that pay homage to the region’s heritage. Expect a vibrant medley of local staples like Bisi Bele Bath, Bendekai Palya (spiced okra), and Kharabath, alongside heirloom recipes such as Soppina Saaru (a spiced leafy green curry) and Majjige Huli (a curd-based vegetable stew). Crunchy Ambode (dal fritters), fragrant Chitranna (lemon rice), and fresh raita complement the richness of the curries. Each dish is delicately seasoned with native spices. The meal was rounded off with a traditional dessert that showcased the indulgent, culinary opulence of the forgotten empire.

And as if this royal feast weren’t indulgent enough, the culinary magic didn’t end there. Another evening, we had a memorable experience at the Pushkarni dinner under a starlit night by the poolside, accompanied by the soulful strains of traditional music and the graceful allure of live dance performances.

Standing before the iconic stone chariot, immortalised on India’s fifty-rupee note, was both humbling and exciting, a reminder of the empire’s unmatched artistry.

The following dawn led me on the Raya Trail, where stories of the Vijayanagara kings unfolded amidst grand temples, intricate carvings, and ancient pathways once trodden by royalty. With patient storytelling, our guide painted vivid scenes of a once-flourishing capital. What stood out most was how the Kamalapura Palace has been designed to echo this rich heritage, from its stone-arched symmetrical hallways, teardrop balustrades, and bay windows; meticulously weaving in details inspired by Hampi’s regal past, ensuring that the grandeur of the empire lives on in both experience and architecture.
