It seemed like the mustachioed farmer was waiting to serve us. And so rightly, for we were the only ones to enter the restaurant – Kala Ghoda’s Farmer And Sons, previously Nico Bombay. The artwork of a man dressed royally with a big mustache on the menu suggested we were in for something eclectic. The ‘farm fresh’ produce mention was an added bonus.
The breakfast menu at Farmer And Sons has an exciting selection of cereals, waffles, sourdough French toast, chia seed pudding, carrot pancakes and even pizza. Launched last week, it will be available from 8 AM until 12 PM we were informed.
We started our breakfast with the Kala Chia Ghoda, a chia seed pudding loaded with fresh cut fruits and soaked in almond milk. The candied walnuts gave the otherwise soggy bowl a nice kick.
The Sourdough Pain Perdue was our next choice since we love caramelised bananas. Not just that, the idea of a French toast made with sourdough sounded promising. The slight tanginess of the bread and the sweetness of the bananas blended like magic. The peanut butter on the side didn’t go with the overall dish, maybe because it was too salty. But, the whiff of freshly-baked bread lingered on in our minds. Chef Ajinkya More claims that all the breads are made in house, and the fruits and veggies are sourced from farms around Pune.
Thinking pizza for breakfast, we picked the Breakfast Pizza – with eggs, prosciutto, spinach, cherry tomatoes, mushroom, Parmesan and Mozzarella as toppings. For thirst-quenchers, we ordered for Citizen Cane – sugarcane, ginger, lime and coconut water, and Powershot – cranberry, apple cider vinegar, lemon water, mint and ginger. The former tasted like coconut water with a mild hint of sugarcane juice, which we approved.
If you are a cereal person, the breakfast menu has a Housemade Muesli with Organic Milk – a hearty option featuring a range of superfoods like flax seeds, puffed amaranth, sunflower seeds to name a few. Alternatively you could also go for the Savoury Morning Bowl packed with kale, avocado, orange segments, boiled egg, yoghurt and honey. Egg lovers can dig into Eggs as You Like ‘Em, which is served with meats of your choice. They have vegetarian sides too.
Farmer And Sons is a good option if you have all the time in the world to soak in the vintage charm of the building that houses it. You can while away the time by admiring the high ceiling, the distressed metallic walls, giant-sized chandeliers and the cool wooden bar stools. Drop by as early as possible, preferably before the place gets packed usually between 9:30 and 10 AM.
Don’t forget to order the Sourdough Pain Perdue. You won’t regret.
