Roasted Onion Chutney

Bored of having sambar with your dosa or idli everyday? This tasty tamarind chutney is great to replace your boring sambar.


1. Start by roasting your onions until completely charred from the outside. Remove into a bowl and peel the outer layer once cool enough to handle. Chop roughly and keep aside.

2. In a pan, heat oil. Add urad dal, red chillies and curry leaves and fry until dal turns golden brown. Switch off flame. Add tamarind and mix well.

3. In a blender, add the chopped onion, fried ingredients, salt and process until you get a coarse chutney. Serve with idlis and dosas.

Optional: You can add ½ cup grated fresh coconut while grinding chutney. In that case, increase red chillies by 1.
